Cuevas (21-4, 15 KOs) stopped three-time
world title challenger Wilfredo Rivera
(33-7-1, 20 KOs) Friday night at the DePaul
Athletic Center in Chicago to capture
the vacant USBO jr middleweight champion.
Rivera was ahead on all scorecards when
an overhand right floored him mid-way
in the seventh. Rivera got back up but
Cuevas attacked immediately with hard
shots upstairs and downstairs. Rivera
was against the ropes taking punishment
when his corner mercifully threw in the
towel. Referee Pete Podgorski stopped
the fight at 1:30 of the 7th round. Coincidentally,
back in April Cuevas stopped former IBF
jr welterweight champ Charles Murray in
the seventh round. The Cuevas-Rivera fight
was televised live on Telemundo and promoted
by Dominic Pesoli of 8-Count Productions.
